what Kazu did with her pencil and paper is relatively simple if you understand the phonetic chart for hiragana. now, i don't know the grid and i can't read it but i know 'vaguely' how the chart is set up. each of those blocks, like Kazu explained to us ;) is the VERTICAL column of that chart. the final block was special because that VERTICAL column has one more character in it than the others. the other blocks used a 'fake' square in the grid and placed a picture of an animal on that face of the blocks. that final block has NO ANIMAL because that vertical column uses a REAL square in the grid with a hiragana character in it.
